Hello Me: Unpacking and Decolonizing my Journey and Mind

“The healing process is simultaneously an individual and communal effort. What is summoned from the depths of one’s soul comes from the wounded collective memory of colonized peoples, but so does the healing power that comes from the woundedness. The memories must be shared with others. It is the telling that makes them available to the consciousness for further critical reflection”
- Leny Mendoza Strobel, Coming Full Circle
Artist Statement
Through the art of the graphic novel, I am able to contextualize experiences in my journey so far. Since these specific moments in my life are no longer in the present, I am able to view these events as personal but also from a third perspective with the knowledge I currently have. With this unique perspective, I am able to unlearn, unpack, and decolonize these experiences, putting them in a context where I can understand what past me found confusing or painful. Through this art form, I find myself healing and even forgiving some of the people from these experiences, myself included.
